BEHAVIOUR
MANAGEMENT
We believe that everyone has the right to feel safe, all of
the time and we actively teach this to children through our protective
behaviour programme.
Children learn best when they experience
success and have positive self-esteem.
We believe that behaviour changes more quickly
when it is handled in a positive manner.
We acknowledge that children feel angry,
frustrated and upset at times and need help to express feelings appropriately.
Children come to kindergarten from a variety
of social backgrounds. The four-year-old needs time, opportunity and space
to learn, with other children, how to play, share, take turns and care
for others as well as their environment.
Staff and parents need to share responsibility,
being consistent at all times, creating a safe, secure, environment for
children, and model appropriate behaviours.
Steps we use for unsafe behaviour.
- Discuss safety in the kindergarten and
involve the children in setting rules and expectations.
- Children to use "Let's talk about
it approach" to
encourage problem solving, listening and to be aware of the rights of
others.
- Adults to work along side children to
model appropriate behaviour and discuss consequences of unsafe behaviour.
- If unsafe or inappropriate behaviour recurs
redirect the child to another area or provide the child with "quiet
time or thinking time".
- If unsafe behaviour is persistently repeated
we will develop a Behaviour Management Plan for that particular behaviour
in consultation with parents.
The staff will:
- Provide opportunity for children to take
risks and experience success.
- Be positive.
- Value children as individuals.
- Encourage children to take responsibility.
- Provide opportunity and time for discussion
and problem solving.
- Help children to recognise and express
their feelings in an appropriate manner.
- Make learning relevant and manageable
for children, be consistent and follow through when managing behaviour.
Behaviour management protects children and
teaches responsibility for their actions as they get older. The aim is
to make children responsible for their own behaviour. If children are
to learn self-control they need to practice making choices and having
to cope with the consequences of these choices.
